Player Background

Owen Butterfield, also known as “smooya” to the CS:GO community, is one of the brightest professional esports players of our time. Born in 1999 and a British resident, Owen has amazed the world with his AWPer skills at a very young age.

Owen’s career as a gamer may not be very long-lived, but it’s still commendable if you consider his age. He has been mastering his skills since he was a teen. He’s most prominent on Twitch and connects to the world through the same platform.

Speaking of Twitch, Owen is also active on all major social media platforms, including Instagram and Twitter. Needless to say, he uses the alias for his CS:GO career, “smooyacs” for social media handles as well.

Professional History

Owen Butterfield came onto the scene of esports when he was only 15. The world at that time was shocked by his proficiency in CS:GO compared to the big-name players much older than him.

Over the years, Owen has changed quite a few teams, but he kept his name for the game, smooya CS:GO. The first team for smooya was Epsilon, where he was active from June 2017 to April 2018.

In the very same month, he joined BIG and stayed there till January of 2019. After a brief absence from the esports scene, he joined renegades in April 2019 but left only after a month. In August of the same year, he re-joined BIG, only to leave in December.

In 2020, Owen Butterfield joined Chaos and played with them for three months. In January of 2021, smooya joined the Movistar Riders. It’s been one of his longest tenures with any team, stretching from January to October 2021.

From October 2021 to March 2022, he was with team Fnatic. At the time of writing in 2022, he’s now competing for Into the Breach.

As you can see, smooya CS:GO has changed a lot of teams over the years. However, it hasn’t impacted his gaming ability in any way. He only seemed to get better.

According to HLTV, he has a 1.20 rating out of 2.00 with 0.78 average kills per round. Over 27% of his kills are from headshots. It might not look like much, but these are great statistics. Also, he contributes over 71% in a round, winning on average!

One of the main reasons behind his proficiency in CS:GO is that he only focused on this game for his entire career. He has participated in pretty much all major international events since 2016 and wowed the world repeatedly.

Owen uses a Razer DeathAdder Chroma mouse with a SteelSeries QcK Heavy mousepad. He uses a 240Hz monitor with only 1024×768 resolution to squeeze every last frame out of the hardware. His efforts to become a professional esports player have helped him win hundreds of thousands of British pounds over the last few years.

Professional Success

To be honest, smooya CS:GO doesn’t have any flashy or over-the-top achievements in his professional career. But what amazes us the most is the consistency.

One of Owen’s first breakthroughs was in the Gfinity Elite Series UK – Season 1. It was an offline event (LAN) where he placed first for team Epsilon. The following year, he took the team to first place in ESL Premiership – Spring 2018.

However, his most significant achievement is the placement in FACEIT Major: London 2018, where he played for team BIG and won a massive $35,000 prize!

In the last couple of years, smooya has won the A-Tier tournaments DreamHack Open November 2021 and REPUBLEAGUE Season 2. He played for team Fnatic in both cases and won the tournament by finishing in first place. The combined prize money for these two tournaments was over $110,000!

Apart from these tournaments, Owen Butterfield has played lots of Major leagues and LANs to hone his skills. He was placed second and third in many of those tournaments, too.
